UNDERSTANDING CONGREGATE LIVING

More Than A Place To Stay

A congregate living health facility, often shortened to CLHF, is a California-licensed residential health facility. The California Department of Public Health describes this category as providing inpatient care with medical supervision, 24-hour skilled nursing and supportive care, alongside other basic services.
This is different from choosing housing alone. An individual’s clinical needs, the facility’s approved scope, available staff and resources, and the care plan all matter when considering an admission.
Valmont is listed as a CLHF. Individual eligibility and specific services must be confirmed directly during the admissions review.

COMPARE THE SETTING

Congregate Living Health Facility

A residential health setting with a licensed clinical care framework. Each facility’s approved services and admissions criteria need to be reviewed.

Assisted Living Or Residential Care

These terms can describe different licensing categories focused on support with daily living. They should not be treated as interchangeable with CLHF care.

A Larger Nursing Facility

The size, environment, staffing model, and available services can differ. Compare actual capabilities and individual care needs rather than labels alone.

BEFORE YOU DECIDE

Questions Worth Asking

01

Clinical Fit

Can the facility meet the person’s current care requirements? What needs fall outside its approved scope? How are changes in condition addressed?

02

Everyday Fit

How are routines, preferences, accessibility needs, communication, and family involvement handled? What should you look for during a visit?

03

Practical Fit

What are the costs, financial arrangements, required documents, and expected timing? Is a suitable opening actually available?
